Configuring Outlook Express 6 for Windows XP to Connect to the VT Mail Server

- How do I configure Outlook Express 6 for Windows XP to connect to the VT Mail server?
- Answer:
- Start Outlook Express.
- If the Internet Connection Wizard starts, close it.
- Click Cancel.
- A dialog box will open and ask, "The new Internet account has not been created yet. Are you sure you want to exit the wizard?". Click the Yes button.
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts....
- Click the Add button.
- Select Mail....
- In the Display Name text box, type your name as you want it to appear in messages you send.
- Click Next.
- In the E-mail Address text box, type: [Your PID]@vt.edu
Note: Replace [Your PID] with your PID.
- Click Next.
- From the My Incoming Mail Server Is a _____ Server drop-down list, select POP3.
- In the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server text box, type: pop.vt.edu
- In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
- Click Next.
- In the Account Name text box, type your PID.
- Clear the Remember Password check box.
Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when checking mail in Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- In the Internet Accounts window, select the Mail tab.
- Select your VT Mail account.
- Click the Properties button.
- Select the Servers tab.
- Under the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the My server requires authentication check box.
- Click the Settings... button.
- Make sure the Use same settings as my incoming mail server is checked.
- Click OK.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Change the number in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box from "25" to "465".
- Under Outgoing mail (SMTP):, place a check in the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box.
- Under Incoming mail (POP3):, place a check in the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box. The number in the Incoming mail (POP3) text box will change from "110" to "995".
- Click OK.
- Click the Close button.
