Important:
  • You must log on to Windows using an account with computer administrator privileges to complete the following steps.
  • These instructions are for faculty and staff only. You need to contact your network liaison to obtain an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. To look up your network liaison, go to the IPR Query Result Web page (http://rdweb.cns.vt.edu/public/info/network-liaisons.html).

To set up your static IP address:
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. View your Internet and network connections.
    • In Windows XP:
      1. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
      2. Click the Network Connections link.
    • In Windows Vista/7:
      1. Click the Network and Internet link.
      2. Click the Network and Sharing Center link.
      3. View your network connections.
        • In Vista, click the Manage network connections link.
        • In 7, click the Change adapter settings link.
  4. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon.

    Note: If your local area connection is not listed, you need to configure your Ethernet card. For assistance, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer's vendor for instructions.

  5. From the drop-down list, select Properties.
  6. In Vista, click the Continue button.
  7. Select your Internet protocol.
    • In XP, select Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

      Note: If it is not listed, install TCP/IP. For detailed instructions, see Reinstalling TCP/IP in Windows XP/Vista/7 (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/2433/).

    • In Vista/7, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  8. Click the Properties button.
  9. Select the Use the following IP address: radio button.
  10. In the IP address: text box, type your IP address.
  11. In the Subnet mask: text box, type your subnet mask.
  12. In the Default gateway: text box, type your default gateway.
  13. Select the Use the following DNS server addresses: radio button.
  14. Set your DNS Server search order.
    • If your computer belongs to a domain within the Hokies Active Directory:

      Note: If your computer belongs to a different domain, contact your domain's administrator for the appropriate settings.

      1. In the Preferred DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.162.237
      2. In the Alternate DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.145.6
    • If your residence hall or office is located south of the Drillfield and your computer does not belong to a domain:
      1. In the Preferred DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.247.66
      2. In the Alternate DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.247.34
    • If your residence hall or office is located elsewhere on campus and your computer does not belong to a domain:
      1. In the Preferred DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.247.98
      2. In the Alternate DNS server: text box, type: 198.82.247.66
  15. Click the Advanced... button.
  16. Select the WINS tab.
  17. Click the Add... button.
  18. In the WINS server: text box, type: 198.82.162.243
  19. Click the Add button.
  20. Click the Add... button.
  21. In the WINS server: text box, type: 198.82.162.242
  22. Click the Add button.
  23. Click OK.
  24. Click OK.
  25. Confirm the changes.
    • In XP/Vista, click the Close button.
    • In Windows 7, click OK.
  26. Restart your computer.
