Configuring Word 2007 to Automatically Number Captions on Pictures Based on Chapter Number
Time to Complete (in minutes):  10

Question:
How do I configure Word 2007 to automatically number picture captions based on chapter number?
Answer:

  1. Repeat the following steps for each chapter heading:
    1. Highlight the chapter title.
    2. Select the Home tab.
    3. In the Styles group, select a heading style for chapter headings.

Note: You must use a unique heading style for your chapter titles, and this heading must not be used anywhere else in the document. For instance, if you apply Heading 1 style to chapter titles, then you need to make sure that no other text uses the Heading 1 style.

  2. Format your chapter numbering style:
    1. Select the Home tab.
    2. In the Paragraph group, click the Multilevel List button.
    3. Select a numbering style that includes Chapter as part of the heading.

Note: New chapter titles will be added as part of the Multilevel List, so you will need to delete the old chapter titles. To tell if a chapter title is part of a Multilevel List, click the chapter title. If the other chapter titles are highlighted, the chapter title is part of a Multilevel List.

  3. Repeat the following steps for each picture to which you want to add a caption:
    1. Right-click the picture to which you want to add a caption.
    2. From the drop-down list, select Insert Caption....
    3. Click the Numbering... button.
    4. From the Format: drop-down list, select the number format you want to use.
    5. Place a check in the Include Chapter Number check box.
    6. From the Chapter Starts with Style drop-down list, select the heading style you chose for your chapter titles.
    7. From the Use Separator: drop-down list, select the punctuation mark to separate the chapter title from the caption number.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Click OK.
