How do I convert a text file (.txt, .prn, .csv) to an Excel file (.xls) in Windows?

  1. Start Excel.
  2. Start opening a file.
    • In 2007, after clicking the Office button, select Open.
    • In 2010 / 2013, under the File tab, select Open.
  3. View available text files.
    • In 2007, from the Files of type: drop-down list, select Text Files (*.prm; *.txt; *.csv).
    • In 2010 / 2013, to the right of the File name: text box, from the drop-down list, select Text Files (*.prm; *.txt; *.csv).
  4. Select the document you want to convert.
  5. Click the Open button.
  6. Select the Delimited radio button.
  7. Click the Next button.
  8. Under Delimiters, clear all the check boxes.
  9. Under Delimiters, place a check in the check box(es) corresponding to the separator(s) your data contains.
  10. Click the Next button.
  11. Click the Finish button.
