How do I manually connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network with my network password in Windows 8?

Notes:
  • Important: To connect to VT-Wireless, your network password must not contain the following special characters: @ $ % & *
    However, your network password must contain one or more of the following special characters to meet the password requirement: ! # ^ ()
  • For Virginia Tech students, current registration for Virginia Tech wireless services using COLA (http://cola.cns.vt.edu/servlets/logon) is required to access the VT-Wireless wireless network.

To manually connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows 8:
  1. If you have not already done so, create a network password. For instructions, see Creating a Network Password (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/3765/).
  2. On your desktop, in the lower-right corner, hover your mouse.
  3. On the right of the screen, from the panel that appears, click the Settings charm.
  4. Near the bottom of the panel, click the wireless charm. A list of wireless networks that are available will appear.
  5. Note: The wireless charm is represented by a stepped ramp like the signal bars on a cell phone.

  6. Select VT-Wireless.
  7. If it is not already checked, place a check in the Connect automatically check box.
  8. Click the Connect button.
  9. In the User name text box, type your PID.
  10. In the Password text box, type your network password.

    Important: Type these credentials carefully and accurately. It is very important that you type them correctly the first time to prevent issues.

  11. Click OK.
  12. If prompted that Windows can’t verify the server's identity, click the Connect button.
  13. Right-click VT-Wireless.
  14. Select View connection properties.
  15. Click the Advanced settings button.
  16. Place a check in the Specify authentication mode: check box.
  17. From the Specify authentication mode: drop-down list, select User authentication.
  18. Click the Save credentials button.
  19. In the User name text box, type your PID.
  20. In the Password text box, type your network password.
  21. Click OK.
  22. Click OK.
  23. Click OK.
  24. If at any point you forget to do some of the steps above, you cannot connect, or you lose connection before saving your credentials:
    1. Right-click VT-Wireless.
    2. Select Forget  this network.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Follow these instructions from the beginning.
