Notes:
- Important: To connect to VT-Wireless, your network password must not contain the following special characters: @ $ % & *
However, your network password must contain one or more of the following special characters to meet the password requirement: ! # ^ ()
- For Virginia Tech students, current registration for Virginia Tech wireless services using COLA (http://cola.cns.vt.edu/servlets/logon) is required to access the VT-Wireless wireless network.
To manually connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows 8:
- If you have not already done so, create a network password. For instructions, see Creating a Network Password (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/3765/).
- On your desktop, in the lower-right corner, hover your mouse.
- On the right of the screen, from the panel that appears, click the Settings charm.
- Near the bottom of the panel, click the wireless charm. A list of wireless networks that are available will appear.
Note: The wireless charm is represented by a stepped ramp like the signal bars on a cell phone.
- Select VT-Wireless.
- If it is not already checked, place a check in the Connect automatically check box.
- Click the Connect button.
- In the User name text box, type your PID.
- In the Password text box, type your network password.
Important: Type these credentials carefully and accurately. It is very important that you type them correctly the first time to prevent issues.
- Click OK.
- If prompted that Windows can’t verify the server's identity, click the Connect button.
- Right-click VT-Wireless.
- Select View connection properties.
- Click the Advanced settings button.
- Place a check in the Specify authentication mode: check box.
- From the Specify authentication mode: drop-down list, select User authentication.
- Click the Save credentials button.
- In the User name text box, type your PID.
- In the Password text box, type your network password.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- If at any point you forget to do some of the steps above, you cannot connect, or you lose connection before saving your credentials:
- Right-click VT-Wireless.
- Select Forget this network.
- Restart the computer.
- Follow these instructions from the beginning.
