Moving Email from VT Mail to VT Google Apps Mail

Question:
How do I move my email from the previous VT Mail system to VT Google Apps Mail?

Answer:

  1. Import your saved email and configure your VT Google Apps Mail account:
    1. Go to the VT Google Apps Web site.
    2. In the Username text box, type your Virginia Tech PID.
    3. In the Password text box, type your Google password.
    4. Click the Sign in button.
    5. In the top-right corner, click the gear button.
    6. From the drop-down list, select Settings.
    7. If not already selected, select the Accounts tab.
    8. To the right of Check mail from other accounts (using POP3), click the Add a POP3 mail account you own link.
    9. In the Email address text box, type: [Your PID]@pop.vt.edu

      Note: Replace [Your PID] with your Virginia Tech PID.

    10. Click the Next Step button.
    11. In the Password text box, type your Google password.
    12. From the Pop Server drop-down list, select pop.vt.edu.
    13. Verify that the Port drop-down list is set to 995.
    14. Place a check in the Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server check box.
    15. Verify that there is a check in the Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail check box.
    16. If you do not want your imported email from your VT Mail account to appear in your Inbox as new, place a check in the Archive Incoming Messages (Skip the Inbox) check box.
    17. Click the Add Account button.
    18. Click the No radio button.
    19. Click the Finish button.

      Notes:
      • This process will run after you log off, moving a group of messages at a time. Email will gradually appear in your VT Google Apps Mail account until it is completely transferred. This could take several hours or days depending on how much email you have.
      • Imported messages may not appear in your inbox. To find your messages:
        • Click the More link.
        • Select All Mail.
      • New messages sent to your Virginia Tech email address will go directly to your VT Google Apps Mail account.

  2. After all of your email has been imported from VT Mail to your VT Google Apps Mail account, delete the setting for VT Google Apps Mail to check VT Mail for new messages:
    1. In the top-right corner, click the gear button.
    2. From the drop-down list, select Settings.
    3. Select the Accounts tab.
    4. To the right of your [Your PID]@pop.vt.edu account, click the Delete button.

      Note: Replace [Your PID] with your Virginia Tech PID.

    5. Click OK.
