Time to Complete (in minutes): 10
- Question:
- How do I configure Word 2003 to automatically number picture captions based on chapter number?
- Answer:
- Repeat the following steps for each chapter heading:
- Highlight the chapter title.
- From the Format menu, select Styles and Formatting....
- At the top of the right pane, from the Styles and Formatting drop-down list, select Syles and Formatting.
- Under Pick Formatting to Apply, select a heading style for your chapter headings.
Note: You must use a unique heading style for your chapter titles, and this heading must not be used anywhere else in the document. For instance, if you apply Heading 1 style to chapter titles, then you need to make sure that no other text uses the Heading 1 style.
- Format your chapter numbering style:
- From the Format menu, select Bullets and Numbering....
- Select the Outline Numbered tab.
- Select a numbering style that includes Chapter as part of the heading.
- Click OK.
Note: New chapter titles will be added as part of the Multilevel List, so you will need to delete the old chapter titles. To tell if a chapter title is part of a Multilevel List, click the chapter title. If the other chapter titles are highlighted, the chapter title is part of a Multilevel List.
- Repeat the following steps for each picture to which you want to add a caption:
- Right-click the picture to which you want to add a caption.
- From the drop-down list, select Caption....
- Click the Numbering... button.
- From the Format: drop-down list, select the number format you want to use.
- Place a check in the Include Chapter Number check box.
- From the Chapter Starts with Style drop-down list, select the heading style you chose for your chapter titles.
- From the Use Separator: drop-down list, select the punctuation mark to separate the chapter title from the caption number.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
