Transitioning Your Virginia Tech WebMail Account to a Virginia Tech Google Services Account

To fully transition your Virginia Tech WebMail account to your Virginia Tech Google Services account, create a Virginia Tech Gmail account, transfer your contacts, import your saved e-mail, and configure your Virginia Tech Gmail account:
- Create a Virginia Tech Gmail account:
- Go to the E-mail Settings ( https://my.vt.edu/gmail ) Web page.
- In the VT PID: text box, type your Virginia Tech PID.
- In the Password: text box, type your PID password.
- Click the Login button.
- At the bottom of the page, click Sign Up.
- Type a new password for your new Virginia Tech Gmail account. This cannot be the same as your Virginia Tech PID password.
- After you have created your account, go to the Virginia Tech Google Start Page (http://start.google.vt.edu/)
- Log on using your PID and the new password you created.
- Export contacts from your Virginia Tech WebMail account:
- Go to the Virginia Tech WebMail (http://webmail.vt.edu/) Web site.
- In the PID: text box, type your Virginia Tech PID.
- In the Password: text box, type your PID password.
- Click the Log On button.
- Select the Address Book tab.
- Click the Export button.
- If it is not already selected, from the Select the Source to Export from: drop-down list, select Address Book.
- Click the Export button. This will export your contacts to a document.
- If prompted by your Web browser, save the file to your desktop.
- Import the contacts into your Virginia Tech Gmail account:
- Log on to your Virginia Tech Gmail account.
- On the left, click Contacts.
- In the upper-left corner, click Import.
- Select the file on your desktop that contains your exported contacts.
- Click Import.
- Add your saved e-mail in your Virginia Tech WebMail account to your Virginia Tech Gmail account:
Note: Only your Virginia Tech WebMail Inbox folder will transfer automatically. If you want to transfer additional folders, such as your Sent mail, follow these instructions. If not, skip to step 5.
- Log on to your Virginia Tech WebMail account.
- On the left side, under Folders, click the link for the folder you want to transfer.
- To the left of From, place a check in the check box to select all e-mail on that page.
- From the More Actions... drop-down list, under Move To:, select Inbox.
- Repeat steps C-D until the folder is empty.
- Repeat steps B-E until you have no more folders you want to transfer.
- Import your saved e-mail and configure your Virginia Tech Gmail account:
- Log on to your Virginia Tech Gmail account.
- Go to Settings.
- Click Accounts.
- Click Add a Mail Account You Own.
- For your Email Address, type: [PID]@pop.vt.edu
Note: Replace [PID] with your Virginia Tech PID.
- Type your password.
- Set the POP server to pop.vt.edu.
- Set the port to 995.
- Select Always Use a Secure Connection.
- If you want, choose a label to apply to all the e-mail you are importing.
- If you do not want your imported e-mail from your Virginia Tech WebMail account to appear in your Inbox as new, select Archive Incoming Messages.
- Select Add Account.
- Select No.
- Click Submit.
Notes:
- This process deletes the messages on your Virginia Tech WebMail account.
- This process will run after you log off, moving a group of messages at a time. E-mail will gradually appear in your Gmail account until it is completely transferred.
- New messages sent to your Virginia Tech e-mail address will go directly to your Gmail account.
- After all of your mail has been imported from WebMail to your Virginia Tech Gmail account, delete the setting for Gmail to check WebMail for new messages.
- Go to Settings.
- Click Accounts.
- Click the Delete button associated with your [PID]@pop.vt.edu account.
- Click Finish.
