Connecting a Windows Mobile Device to the VT-Wireless Wireless Network

             How do I connect my Windows Mobile device to the VT-Wireless wireless network?

Answer:

To connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network using a personal network access certificate, the following are required:

  • A valid Virginia Tech PID and password.
  • An active wireless service registration. Virginia Tech students can register for service using COLA (https://cola.cns.vt.edu/servlets/logon). Faculty and staff should contact their departmental communications liaison to register for this service.

To connect a Windows Mobile device to the VT-Wireless wireless network:

1.  Download a certificate from http://netcert.cns.vt.edu/ to your computer.
     Note: Remember where on your computer you download it so that you can locate it for the next step.
2.  E-mail the certificate to yourself.
3.  Using your Windows Mobile device, retrieve the message with the cerficiate attached.
4.  Download the certificate onto your device.
5.  On the device, tap Start.
6.  Click File Explorer.
7.  Open the folder that contains the certificate (.cer) file.
8.  Open the certificate (.cer) file.
9.  When prompted to install the certificate, tap Yes.
10.  After the certificate is installed, tap Start.
11.  Tap Settings.
12.  Tap Connections.
13.  Tap Wifi Prefs.
14.  Tap Scan for wifi networks.
15.  Tap VT-Wireless.
16.  Tap Next.
17.  From the Authentication types drop-down list, select WPA2.
18.  From the Encryption type drop-down list, select AES.
19.  Place a check in the The key is automatically provided check box.
20.  Tap Next.
21.  Place a check in the Use IEEE 802.1x network access control check box.
22.  For EAP Type, choose Smart Card or Certificate.
23.  Tap Finish.
