Configuring an iPhone to Connect to the Virginia Tech Mail Server

Question: 

How do I configure an iPhone to connect to the Virginia Tech Mail server?

Answer:

1.  Add the e-mail account on the iPhone:

  • If this is the first e-mail account you are setting up on the iPhone:
         A.  Tap Mail.
         B.  Select Other.
  • If you already have an e-mail account configured on the iPhone:
         A.  From the Home screen, select Settings.
         B.  Select Mail.
         C.  Select Accounts.
         D.  Select Add Account.
         E.  Select Other.

2.  Enter your Mail account information:

     A.  Select POP.
     B.  For Name, enter the name you want to be displayed for this e-mail account.
     C.  For Address, enter [Your PID]@vt.edu
           Note: Replace [Your PID] with your own PID.
     D.  For Description, enter a unique description to identify this specific e-mail account.
     E.  For Incoming Mail Server, enter the following:
           i.  For Host Name, enter pop.vt.edu
           ii.  For Username, enter your PID.          
           iii.  For Password, enter your PID password.
     F.  For Outgoing Mail Server, enter the following:
           i.  For Host Name, enter auth.smtp.vt.edu
           ii.  For Username, enter your PID.
           iii.  For Password, enter your PID password.
 
3.  Verify the following settings:

  • SSL is on for both incoming and outgoing mail servers
  • Authentication is set to Password for both incoming and outgoing mail servers
  • Incoming server port is set to 995
  • Outgoing server port is set to 465

4.  Tap Save.  The iPhone will test your incoming and outgoing mail settings and connect to your inbox.
