Connecting to the VT-Wireless Wireless Network in Windows Vista

Question:
How do I connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows Vista?

Answer:

Note: For Virginia Tech students, current registration for Virginia Tech wireless services using COLA (https://cola.cns.vt.edu/servlets/logon) is required to access the VT-Wireless wireless network.

To connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows Vista:
  1. If you have not already done so, create a network password. For instructions, see Creating a Network Password (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/3765/).
  2. If you previously connected to VT-Wireless by downloading and installing a network certificate, delete all certificates. For instructions, see Deleting VT-Wireless Certificates in Windows XP/Vista/7 (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/3513).
  3. Run the script to configure your computer to access the VT-Wireless wireless network.
    1. Depending on whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows, download the appropriate script file.
      • If you are using a 32-bit version of Windows, click the following link to download the VT-Wireless.exe script file: Windows VT-Wireless script - 32 bit (http://www.support.vt.edu/tools/thetools/VT-Wireless32.exe).
      • If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, click the following link to download the VT-Wireless.exe script file: Windows VT-Wireless script - 64 bit (http://www.support.vt.edu/tools/thetools/VT-Wireless.exe).
    2. Save the script file to your desktop.
    3. If you are connected to the VT-Wireless wireless network, disconnect from the VT-Wireless wireless network.
      1. In the system tray, click the network icon.
      2. Select VT-Wireless.
      3. Click the Disconnect button.
    4. On your desktop:
      • If you downloaded the 32-bit version of the script, double-click the VT-Wireless32 icon.
      • If you downloaded the 64-bit version of the script, double-click the VT-Wireless icon.
    5. Click the Run button.
    6. Click OK.
    7. After the setup completes, click OK.
    8. Click the No button.
  4. Connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network.
    1. When the Additional information is required to connect to VT-Wireless. balloon appears, click the middle of the balloon.
    2. In the User name: text box, type your PID.
    3. In the Password: text box, type your network password.
    4. Verify that the Logon domain: text box is cleared.
    5. Click OK.
  5. If the Set Network Location window appears:
    1. Select Public location.
    2. Click the Close button.
