How do I connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows XP?
Answer:

Note: To keep using the VT-Wireless wireless network after your certificate expires, delete your old certificate and update to a new certificate.  To do this, see Deleting VT-Wireless Certificates in Windows XP/Vista.

The following are required to connect to this network:

  • Windows XP (Service Pack 2) with all current updates and patches available through Windows Update applied.
  • A valid Virginia Tech PID and password.
  • A personal network access certificate installed on your computer. For installation instructions, visit the Login to NetCert via CAS Web page (http://netcert.cns.vt.edu/).
  • For Virginia Tech Students, current registration for Virginia Tech wireless services using COLA (https://cola.cns.vt.edu/servlets/logon).

      To connect to the VT-Wireless wireless network in Windows XP:
      1. In your system tray, double-click on the wireless device icon.
      2. Under the Wireless Networks tab, click the View Wireless Networks button.
      3. Under Choose a Wireless Network, select VT-Wireless.
      4. Click the Connect button.
      5. In the next Click here to process your logon information for the network VT-Wireless pop-up balloon, click anywhere but on the "X".

        Note: If you do not receive the Click here to process your logon information pop-up:
        1. In the system tray, right-click on the wireless network icon.
        2. Click View Available Wireless Networks.
        3. From the menu on the left, click Change advanced settings.
        4. Select the Wireless Network tab.
        5. Click on VT-Wireless.
        6. Click Properties.
        7. Select the Authentication tab.
        8. From the drop-down menu, select one of the following:
          • Smart Card
          • other Certificate
          • AES
        9. Click Properties
        10. Select Use a certificate.
        11. Place a check in the Use simple cert selection check box.
        12. Place a check in the Validate server cert check box.
        13. Place a check in the Thawte Premium Server CA check box.
        14. Click OK.
        15. Place a check in the Authenticate as computer when computer info is available check box.
        16. Click OK.
        17. Click OK.
      6. In the Validate Server Certificate pop-up, click OK.

        Note: If this pop-up does not appear, configure Windows XP to manage your wireless connection.
      7. Reboot your computer.
      8. Verify that your system automatically connects to the VT-Wireless wireless network and that you can connect to Web sites.
