How do I install the Virginia Tech Certification Authority (VTCA) root certificate for Mozilla Firefox 3.6 in Windows and Mac OS X?

Answer:

Important: Log on to your computer with an account with computer administrator privileges.

To install the VTCA root certificate:
  1. Download the VTCA Root Certificate (http://www.pki.vt.edu/developer/rootca.html#user).
  2. Place a check in the Trust this CA to identify web sites check box.
  3. Place a check in the Trust this CA to identify email users check box.
  4. Place a check in the Trust this CA to identify software developers check box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Verify that the certificate is installed properly:
    1. Open your certificate options:
      • In Firefox 3.6 for Windows, from the Tools menu, select Options....
      • In Firefox 3.6 for Mac OS X, from the Firefox menu, select Preferences....
    2. Select the Advanced tab.
    3. Select the Encryption tab.
    4. Click the View Certificates button.
    5. Select the Authorities tab.
    6. From the list, under Virginia Tech Root CA, select Virginia Tech Root CA.
    7. Click the View... button.
    8. Verify that the fingerprints display as follows:
      • SHA1 Fingerprint: "AF:6F:EB:42:FA:2F:E4:A2:6E:9F:7F:B5:B5:FF:3A:BC:13:C6:0D:81"
      • MD5 Fingerprint: "CE:03:7C:49:13:54:5B:F5:D3:70:7A:18:4C:FC:25:30"
    9. Click the Close button.
    10. Click OK.
    11. Close the Advanced window.
