Important: Log on to Windows with an account with computer administrator privileges.
To install the VTCA root certificate in Internet Explorer 7/8:
- Choose a method for installing the VTCA root certificate:
- Use the immediate installation mode:
- Go to the VTCA Bundle Install download (http://www.pki.vt.edu/gettingstarted/vtca_bundle_install.exe).
- Click the Run button.
- If prompted again, click the Run button.
- If prompted, click the Allow button.
- In Vista, click the Allow button.
- In 7, click the Yes button.
- The certificate will install automatically.
- Install the certificate using the VTnet CD. For instructions on getting the CD, refer to Obtaining the Most Recent Version of VTnet (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/1091/).
- Use the verbose installation mode:
- Download the VTCA Root Certificate (http://www.pki.vt.edu/developer/rootca.html#user).
- Click the Save button.
- Save the file to your desktop.
- On your desktop, double-click the cacert.cer icon.
- Click the Open button.
- If prompted, click the Allow button.
- Click the Install Certificate button.
- Click Next.
- Click the Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- If prompted, click the Yes button.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Verify that the certificate is installed properly.
- Start Internet Explorer.
- From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Select the Content tab.
- Click the Certificates button.
- Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.
- From the list, double-click Virginia Tech Root CA.
- Select the Details tab.
- Select Thumbprint.
- Verify that the following value is listed:
"af 6f eb 42 fa 2f e4 a2 6e 9f 7f b5 b5 ff 3a bc 13 c6 0d 81"
- Click OK.
- Click the Close button.
- Click OK.
- Quit Internet Explorer.
