Caution: Close any programs and uninstall any existing antivirus software before proceeding with these instructions. Failure to do so could result in problems with installation and with other programs on your computer. If you only need to uninstall Norton or Symantec AntiVirus, then continue reading.
Important: 4Help recommends that you choose the default installation options when installing Norton AntiVirus.
Notes:
- This version of Norton AntiVirus is not compatible with Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier. If you are currently using OS X v10.3 or earlier, you must either upgrade your operating system or download an older version of the antivirus software. For more information, refer to antivirus.vt.edu (http://antivirus.vt.edu/)
- Since part of this article requires restarting the computer, it is recommended that you bookmark this article in your Internet browser.
- The Internet Explorer browser will not download the Norton AntiVirus 11.0.3 file correctly. You will need to use Firefox, Netscape, or Safari.
To download and install Norton AntiVirus 11.0.3:
- Download Norton AntiVirus 11.0.3:
- Go to the Symantec AntiVirus Downloads page (http://www.antivirus.vt.edu/download/).
Important: This Norton AntiVirus download is available at no charge for current Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and retirees only.
- Download the Norton AntiVirus installer:
- Set your browser preferences to save downloaded files to the desktop.
- In the PID: text box, type your Virginia Tech PID.
- In the Password: text box, type your PID password.
- Click the Logon button.
- Under Macintosh OS X, click the Download link.
- Finish the download according to your browser:
- In Firefox/Netscape:
- Select the Save File option.
- Click OK.
- After the file finishes downloading, on the desktop, double-click the Vtnav1103mac.zip icon.
- In Safari: When the download finishes, a window will open asking if you are sure you want to continue downloading, click Continue.
- On the desktop, double-click the Vtnav1103mac folder icon.
- Uninstall previous versions of Norton or Symantec AntiVirus:
- Double-click the Step 1 - RemoveSymantecMacFiles.command icon.
- If prompted, click Open.
- Type your administrator password.
- Press the Enter key.
- A prompt will tell you "Enter Choice (1 or 2)". At this prompt, type: 1
- Press the Enter key.
- Depending on whether any existent Norton or Symantec AntiVirus programs are found, complete the following steps:
- If any Norton or Symantec AntiVirus programs are detected:
- In the Terminal window, a prompt will ask "Do you wish to restart the computer now (WARNING: Unsaved changes in other open applications will be lost if you do!) (y/n)?" At this prompt, type: y
- Press the Enter key.
- If no Norton or Symantec AntiVirus programs are detected: In the Terminal window, you will see the message "NOTE: If you double-clicked this script, quit Terminal application now." Close the Terminal window.
- Begin the installation of Norton AntiVirus 11.0.3:
- If the Vtnav1103mac folder is not already open, on the desktop, double-click the Vtnav1103mac folder icon.
- Double-click the Step 2 - Norton_AntiVirus_11.0.3_Mac_Corp_EN.dmg icon.
- In the Norton AntiVirus CD window, double-click the Norton AntiVirus Installer icon.
- Click Continue.
- Read the text in the Important Information pane and click Continue.
- Read the text in the Symantec Software License Agreement pane and click Continue.
- Click the Agree button.
- Select the destination volume where you want to install Norton AntiVirus.
- Click Continue.
- Click the Install button.
Note: If you want to change the default install location, click the Change Install Location... button.
- An Authenticate window will open. In the Name: text box, type the name of an account on your computer that holds administrator privileges.
Note: If you are unsure about these instructions, or if you do not have an account with computer administrator privileges, contact your computer's manufacturer, your departmental network liaison, or contact 4Help by using the

- In the Password: text box, type the password for the administrative account.
- Click OK.
- Click the Continue Installation button.
- Click the Yes button.
- Click the Restart button. Your computer will restart.
- After your computer finishes restarting, create a daily virus scan:
- Open Finder.
- From the Go menu, select Applications.
- In the Applications window, scroll until you find the Symantec Solutions folder.
- Double-click the Symantec Solutions folder.
- Double-click the Norton AntiVirus icon.
- On the left side of the Norton AntiVirus window, click the Automatic Protection button.
- Under Scheduled Protection, click the Configure... button.
Note: If the Configure... button is greyed out:
- To the left of Click the Lock to Make Changes, click the Lock icon.
- An Authenticate window will open. In the Name: text box, type the name of the account on your computer that holds administrative privileges.
- In the Password: text box, type the password for the administrative account.
- Click OK.
- Click the Add Virus Scan Event button. If this button is greyed out, see the note above.
- Clear the Event Name: text box and type: Norton AntiVirus Daily Scan
- From the Event Frequency: drop-down list, select Daily.
- From the Event Type: spin box, select a time of day when you know your computer will be running.
- Next to the Event Type: spin box, click AM or PM to cycle between AM and PM.
- Next to Item to Scan:, click the Click to Select... link.
- In the left pane, under Devices, click the Macintosh HD icon.
- Click the Choose button.
- Click OK.
- From the Norton AntiVirus menu, select Quit Norton AntiVirus.
