Downloading and Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows and Windows Server

How do I install Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows and Windows Server?

Symantec Endpoint Protection is available for no charge for current Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and retirees only.

To download and install Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows:

  1. Log on to Windows with an account with computer administrator privileges.
  2. Close any open programs before proceeding with these instructions. Failure to do so could result in problems with this installation and other programs on your computer.
  3. Uninstall all other antivirus software, including all versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection. For instructions, refer to Uninstalling a Program in Windows.
  4. Go to the antivirus.vt.edu page.
  5. In the left menu column, click the Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows link.
  6. In the PID: text box, type your Virginia Tech PID.
  7. In the Password: text box, type your PID password. If you have forgotten your PID password, follow the instructions at Changing Forgotten PID Password with Account Recovery Options.
  8. Click the logon button.
  9. In the middle of the page, in the blue-outlined box, click the Download link.
  10. Save the installer file.
  11. Double-click the installer.
    • If you downloaded the 32-bit version, double-click vtsep1201ru4.
    • If you downloaded the 64-bit version, double-click vtsep1201ru4x64.
  12. In the user account control window, click the Yes button.
  13. The installer will automatically run. When it is complete, click OK.
  14. Restart your computer.
    • If you are prompted to restart your computer, click the Yes button.
    • If you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart your computer.

Note: If you receive a "file name is not a valid win32 application" or an "unable to read cab data" error message, refer to Error Message when Downloading or Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows.
