"The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable" Error Message When Accessing an Inbox or Calendar on the Virginia Tech Exchange Server in Windows XP
Time to Complete (in minutes): 20
Question:
I get a "The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." error message when I am trying to access another person's inbox or calendar on the Virginia Tech Exchange server in Windows XP. What is wrong and how can I fix this?

Answer:

Currently, there are two servers used for Exchange mail, Fangorn and Rivendell. You may get this error message when your Exchange account is on a different Exchange server than the person (or resource account) whose inbox or calendar you are trying to access. Therefore, your computer is unable to resolve what it considers to be an unqualified server name.

To connect to an inbox or calendar on a different Microsoft Exchange server:
  1. Configure your WINS server settings. For instructions, refer to Configuring WINS Settings in Windows XP/Vista/7 (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/1316/).

Important: If you are running a third-party firewall, such as Integrity Desktop, you must add the Virginia Tech Exchange servers' IP addresses, including the WINS server addresses, to your trusted zone list. For instructions, refer to Cannot Connect to the Virginia Tech Exchange Server While Running Integrity Desktop (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/2782/).

  2. If you continue to receive this error message after configuring your WINS server settings, edit your hosts file to include both Virginia Tech Exchange servers' IP addresses.

Caution: Editing the hosts file can cause your computer to malfunction. Take extreme care when following these instructions. If you are uncomfortable with performing these steps, contact a computer professional for assistance.

To edit your hosts file to include both Virginia Tech Exchange servers:
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Select My Computer.
    3. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\.
    4. Right-click the hosts icon.
    5. Select Open.
