Computer Will Not Start in Safe Mode in Windows XP/Vista

Question:
When I try to start my computer in Safe Mode in Windows XP/Vista, the options menu does not appear. What should I do?
Answer:
Important: Safe Mode may not load all of your startup services and background applications, including video and CD drivers. Do not operate in Safe Mode for an extended period of time, but rather use this function to fix malware and other software troubles that require limited services and processes.

  • In Windows XP:

    If you are unable to access this menu by holding the F8 key on startup, you can configure Windows XP to load in safe mode automatically whenever it starts.To do so:

    1. Click the Start button, and then select Run.
    2. In the Open text box, type: msconfig
    3. Click OK.
    4. Select the BOOT.INI tab.
    5. Place a check in the /SAFEBOOT check box.
    6. Important: To start Windows XP normally, clear this check box.

    7. Select one of the following options:
      • MINIMAL for Safe Mode
      • NETWORK for Safe Mode with Networking
      Caution: Do not use the MINIMAL option if you do not have local administrator privileges or if you are logging on to the machine with a domain account (for example, Hokies or University Services).You will not be able to log in to take the computer back out of safe mode.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Click the Restart button.
  • In Windows Vista:
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. In the Search bar, type: Run
    3. In the Open text box, type: msconfig
    4. Click OK.
    5. Select the Boot tab.
    6. Place a check in the Safe Boot check box.

      Important: To start Windows Vista normally, clear this check box.
    7. Select one of the following options:
      • MINIMAL for Safe Mode
      • NETWORK for Safe Mode with Networking
      Caution: Do not use the MINIMAL option if you do not have local administrator privileges or if you are logging on to the machine with a domain account (for example, Hokies or University Services).You will not be able to log in to take the computer back out of safe mode.
