- Please register for wireless service at Virginia Tech before configuring your computer. See CNS Wireless Registration.
- You must log on to your computer with an account that has computer administrator privileges in order to complete these instructions.
- You may need your Windows CD in order to complete these instructions.
To connect to the VT_WLAN wireless network:
- Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
- Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
- Click the Network Connections link.
- Right-click your wireless network connection, and select Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Click the Properties button.
- Select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.
- Select the Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically option.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Select the DNS tab.
- Clear the Register This Connection's Address in DNS check box.
- Select the WINS tab.
- Select the Default: Use NetBIOS Setting from the DHCP Server.... option.
- Click OK.
- In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
- Click the Close button.
- Right-click your wireless network connection, and select View Available Wireless Networks.
- Select VT_WLAN.
- Click the Connect button.
- You will be prompted with a warning that this network is not secured by WEP or WPA. Click the Connect Anyways button.
- To access the wireless network:
- Verify that the signal icon on your taskbar is getting a signal.
- Open your Web browser.
- Go to the Virginia Tech homepage (http://www.vt.edu/). You will be redirected to a network confirmation screen.
- In the PID text box, type your PID.
Important: Be sure to use all lower-case letters.
- In the Password text box, type your password.
- Click the Log In button.
