Important:
  • The following instructions are specific to Windows XP SP2/SP3.For instructions on installing the latest service pack, refer to Manually Running Windows Update in Windows 2000/XP (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/1857/).
  • Please register for wireless service at Virginia Tech before configuring your computer. See CNS Wireless Registration.
  • You must log on to your computer with an account that has computer administrator privileges in order to complete these instructions.
  • You may need your Windows CD in order to complete these instructions.

To connect to the VT_WLAN wireless network:

  1. Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
  3. Click the Network Connections link.
  4. Right-click your wireless network connection, and select Properties.
  5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Click the Properties button.
  7. Select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.
  8. Select the Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically option.
  9. Click the Advanced button.
  10. Select the DNS tab.
  11. Clear the Register This Connection's Address in DNS check box.
  12. Select the WINS tab.
  13. Select the Default: Use NetBIOS Setting from the DHCP Server.... option.
  14. Click OK.
  15. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
  16. Click the Close button.
  17. Right-click your wireless network connection, and select View Available Wireless Networks.
  18. Select VT_WLAN.
  19. Click the Connect button.
  20. You will be prompted with a warning that this network is not secured by WEP or WPA. Click the Connect Anyways button.
  21. To access the wireless network:
    1. Verify that the signal icon on your taskbar is getting a signal.
    2. Open your Web browser.
    3. Go to the Virginia Tech homepage (http://www.vt.edu/). You will be redirected to a network confirmation screen.
    4. In the PID text box, type your PID.
      Important: Be sure to use all lower-case letters.
    5. In the Password text box, type your password.
    6. Click the Log In button.
