Formatting a New Partition or Logical Drive on Your Hard Drive in Windows

How do I format a new partition or logical drive on my hard drive in Windows?

Caution: The Disk Management tool is used to create, format, and delete partitions on your hard drive. Use extreme caution while using this tool, as it could result in lost or compromised data.

To format a new partition or logical drive:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type: partition
  3. As you type, results will appear and change. Select Create and format hard disk partitions.
  4. Right-click the partition or logical drive you want to format.
  5. Select Format....
  6. In the Volume label: text box, type a name for the partition or logical drive.
  7. From the File system: drop-down list, select the file system you want to use.
  8. From the Allocation unit size: drop-down list, select Default.
  9. Place a check in the Perform a quick format check box.
  10. Click OK.
  11. To begin the format, click OK.
