Scanning Your Computer Using Ad-Aware 2007 for Windows XP/Vista
Time to Complete (in minutes):  30

Question:
How do I scan my computer using Ad-Aware 2007 for Windows 2000/XP?

Answer:

Important: Spyware detection and removal programs, including Ad-Aware, do not always catch every spyware program when used alone. For better security, use more than one spyware detection program on your computer.

For example, use both Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware.

Important: Ad-aware is free for individual use only. To use the software in your office, you must purchase an end-user license.

To scan your computer for spyware:

  1. Start Ad-Aware.
  2. Click the Update button.
  3. Note: If you receive an error message, click OK and run Webupdate.

  4. Click the Connect button.
  5. In response to the "Would You Like To Update the Definitions File Now," question window, click Yes.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. In the Ad-Aware 2007 window, click the Scan Now button.
  9. Choose whether you want a Smart, Full, or Custom scan.
    • A Smart scan scans all of your computer's critical processes.
    • A Full scan scans your entire system.
    • A Custom scan scans only the elements that you have selected to be scanned.
  10. Click Scan.
  11. Note: Depending on what the Ad-Ware program finds, some of the following steps may or may not be included.

  12. Next to each object found, place a check in the check box.
  13. Click the Quarantine button.
  14. Click Finish.
  15. In the Ad-Aware 2007 window, click OK.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click OK.
  18. Click the Open Quarantine List link.
  19. Select the quarantined file.
