How do I configure Outlook Express 6 for Windows to view newsgroups?
Answer:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts....
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. From the drop-down list, select News....
  5. In the Display Name: text box, type your name.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the E-mail Address: text box, type: [Your PID]@vt.edu

    Note: Replace [Your PID] with your Virginia Tech PID.

  8. Click Next.
  9. In the News (NNTP) Server: text box, type: news.vt.edu
  10. Set up your authentication:
    • If you connect through the Virginia Tech Modem Pool or on-campus Ethernet, clear the My News Server Requires Me to Log On check box.
    • If you connect through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP):
      1. Place a check in the My News Server Requires Me to Log On check box.
      2. Click Next.
      3. In the Account Name: text box, type your PID.
      4. Clear the Remember Password check box.

        Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when logging on to Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.

      5. If already checked, clear the Log On Using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Click the Close button.
  14. Click the Yes button.
  15. For each newsgroup to which you want to subscribe:
    1. Select the newsgroup to which you want to subscribe.
    2. Click the Subscribe button.
  16. Click OK.
