  • Outlook for Windows and Entourage for Mac OS were designed to be the e-mail clients of choice when accessing an Exchange server. If you use any other e-mail client, you should expect some quirks. For Outlook and Entourage instructions, see the appropriate information:

To configure OS X Mail, v10.4 to connect to the Virginia Tech Exchange Server:

  • If you do not have an account set up in OS X Mail v10.4:
    1. Start Mail.
    2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
    3. Click the Accounts icon.
    4. Click the Plus Sign (+) button.
    5. From the Account Type drop-down list, select IMAP.
    6. In the Account Description text box, type: Exchange Mail
    7. In the Full Name text box, type your name as you want it to appear on messages you send.
    8. In the Email Address text box, type: [Your Hokies ID]@exchange.vt.edu

      Note: Replace [Your Hokies ID] with your Hokies ID.

    9. Click the Continue button.
    10. In the Incoming Mail Server text box, type: exsecure.vt.edu
    11. In the User Name text box, type your Hokies ID.
    12. In the Password text box, type your Hokies password.
    13. Click the Continue button.
    14. In the Outgoing Mail Server text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
    15. Click OK.
    16. Click the Continue button.
    17. Click the Continue button.
    18. If asked if you want to import mailboxes, click the No button.
    19. In the Enter Password for Account window, click Cancel.
    20. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
    21. Select your Exchange account.
    22. Select the Advanced tab.
    23. Beside Port, place a check in the Use SSL check box.
    24. Select the Account Information tab.
    25. Click the Server Settings button.
    26. In the Server port text box, type: 465.
    27. Place a check in the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) check box.
    28. From the Authentication drop-down list, select Password.
    29. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
    30. Click OK.
    31. Close the Accounts window.
    32. Click the Save button.
    33. Click the Get Mail icon.
    34. In the Enter Password for Account text box, type your Hokies password.
    35. Click OK.
  • If you have an account set up in OS X, v10.4 Mail:
    1. Start Mail.
    2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
    3. Click the Accounts icon.
    4. Click the Plus Sign (+) button.
    5. From the Account Type drop-down list, select IMAP.

    14. From the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop-down list, select Add Server.
    15. In the Outgoing Mail Server text box, type:auth.smtp.vt.edu
    16. In the Server port text box, type: 465.
    17. Place a check in the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
    18. From the Authentication drop-down list, select Password.
    19. In the User Name text box, type your PID
    20. Click OK.
    21. Select the Advanced tab.
    22. Beside Port, place a check in the UseSSL check box.
    23. Close the Accounts window.
    24. Click the Save button.
    25. Click the Get Mail icon.
    26. In the Enter Password for Account text box, type your Hokies password.

Important: When checking your Exchange e-mail account, you must use your Hokies ID and password.
