How can I prevent a program from starting when Windows XP/Vista/7 starts?

To prevent a program from starting automatically:
  1. Remove the program's shortcut from the startup folders.
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Select All Programs.
    3. Right-click the Startup folder.
    4. From the drop-down list, select Explore.
    5. For each program listed that you do not want to start automatically, drag the icon to the desktop.
    6. Close the startup window.
    7. Click the Start button.
    8. Select All Programs.
    9. Right-click the Startup folder.
    10. View all users.
      • In XP/Vista, from the drop-down list, select Explore All Users.
      • In 7, from the drop-down list, select Explore all users.
    11. For each program that you do not want to start automatically, drag the icon to the desktop.
    12. Close the startup window.
    13. Restart your computer.
  2. Disable built-in startup features.
    1. For each program you want to prevent from automatically starting, disable the built-in startup feature, if available. If you are unsure about how to do this, contact the program's manufacturer for details.
    2. Restart your computer.
  3. In XP, clean up the autoexec.bat file.
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Select Run....
    3. In the Open: text box, type: sysedit
    4. Click OK. The System Configuration Editor window will open. The C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT window will be the foremost window.
      • If the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT window is empty, close the System Configuration Editor window.
      • If the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT window is not empty:
        1. For each program you want to prevent from automatically starting:
          1. At the beginning of the line with the name of the program, type: REM
          2. Press the space bar key.
        2. From the File drop-down list, select Save.
        3. From the File drop-down list, select Exit.
        4. Restart your computer.
  4. Edit your system registry.

    Caution: Editing the registry can cause your computer to malfunction. Take extreme care when following these instructions. If you are uncomfortable with performing these steps, contact a computer professional for assistance.

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Start the registry editor utility.
      • In XP:
        1. Select Run....
        2. In the Open: text box, type: regedit
        3. Click OK.
      • In Vista/7:
        1. Your cursor will be automatically placed in the text box.
        2. Type: regedit
        3. From the list, select regedit.
    3. Confirm starting the registry editor.
      • In Vista, click the Continue button.
      • In 7, click the Yes button.
    4. Back up your registry. For instructions, see Backing Up Your Registry in Windows XP/Vista/7 (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/2708/).
    5. In the left pane, double-click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER icon.
    6. In the left pane, double-click the Software icon.
    7. In the left pane, double-click the Microsoft icon.
    8. In the left pane, double-click the Windows icon.
    9. In the left pane, double-click the CurrentVersion icon.
    10. In the left pane, select the Run folder.
    11. For each program you want to prevent from automatically starting:
      1. In the right pane, right-click the file that corresponds to the program.
      2. From the drop-down list, select Delete.
      3. Click the Yes button.
    12. From the File drop-down list, select Exit.
    13. Restart your computer.
