Redirecting the My Documents Folder to Your Personal Virginia Tech Network-Attached Storage (NAS) Space in Windows XP
Time to Complete (in minutes):  10

Question:
How do I redirect the My Documents folder to my personal space on the Virginia Tech Network-Attached Storage (NAS) in Windows XP?
Answer:

Most likely, the largest folder in your profile is the My Documents folder. If you use a roaming profile, your profile is downloaded each time you log on, and uploaded each time you log off, potentially creating a long wait. You can eliminate some of the wait time, as well as save disk space on your computer, by redirecting the folder to your space on the NAS.This will also allow you to access your folder from any computer connected to the Internet.

Notes:
  • Important: You must log on to your computer with your Hokies ID and password in order for these instructions to work.
  • You must have the My Documents folder on your desktop in order for these instructions to work.If you do not have it on the desktop, refer to Displaying and Hiding Desktop Icons in Windows XP. (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/1979/)

To redirect the My Documents folder to your NAS space:

  1. Right-click the My Documents folder, and select Properties.
  2. To configure your folder to open in your NAS space, log on to Hokies Self-Service(http://selfservice.w2k.vt.edu) with your Hokies ID and password.
  3. Note: You will experience a brief redirect when you click on the Hokies Self-Service link.

  4. Configure your folder:
    • If you have not set a Home Directory and you have not permanently mapped a drive to your NAS storage space: In the Target text box, type: storage.vt.edu[Your mystore location][Your Hokies ID]My Documents

      Notes:
    • If you have your Home Directory pointing to your NAS space or have already mapped a drive to your NAS space: In the Target text box, type: [Drive Letter]:My Documents

Note: Replace [Drive Letter] with the letter of the drive you mapped to your space on the NAS or to your home directory.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click the Yes button.
