Configuring Outlook 2003 to Connect to the VT Mail Server

Note: If you are checking multiple accounts with Outlook 2003/2007, by default all of your incoming e-mail from all of the accounts will arrive in the same Inbox.If you want your VT Mail messages to go to a separate Inbox, set up a new profile for the new account.For instructions, refer to

To configure Outlook 2003 to connect to the VT Mail server:
- Start Outlook.
- Start the E-mail Accounts Wizard.
- If you have not previously configured an e-mail account, the configuration wizard will start automatically.If so:
- Click Next.
- Select the Yes option.
- If the wizard does not start automatically:
- From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts....
- Select the Add a new e-mail account radio button.
- Click Next.
- Select the POP3 radio button.
- Click Next.
- In the Your Name: text box, type your name as you want it to appear in messages you send.
- In the E-mail Address: text box, type: [Your PID]@vt.edu
Note: Replace [Your PID] with your PID.
- In the Incoming Mail Server (POP3) text box, type: pop.vt.edu
- In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
- In the User Name text box, type your PID.
- Clear the Remember Password check box.
Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when checking mail in Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.
- Click the More Settings... button.
- Select the Outgoing Server tab.
- Place a check in the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
- Check to make sure the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button is selected.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Under Incoming Server, place a check in the This Server Requires an Encrypted Connection (SSL) check box.The port should change to 995 (default is 110).
- Under Outgoing server (SMTP):, place a check in the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) check box.
- Change the port to 465 (the default is 25).
- Click OK.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Click Close.
