Configuring Outlook 2003 to Connect to the VT Mail Server

How do I configure Outlook 2003 to connect to the VT Mail server?
Answer:

Note: If you are checking multiple accounts with Outlook 2003/2007, by default all of your incoming e-mail from all of the accounts will arrive in the same Inbox.If you want your VT Mail messages to go to a separate Inbox, set up a new profile for the new account.For instructions, refer to Adding Profiles in Outlook 2003/2007 (http://answers.vt.edu/kb/entry/1432/).

To configure Outlook 2003 to connect to the VT Mail server:

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Start the E-mail Accounts Wizard.
    • If you have not previously configured an e-mail account, the configuration wizard will start automatically.If so:
      1. Click Next.
      2. Select the Yes option.
    • If the wizard does not start automatically:
      1. From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts....
      2. Select the Add a new e-mail account radio button.
      3. Click Next.
  3. Select the POP3 radio button.
  4. Click Next.
  5. In the Your Name: text box, type your name as you want it to appear in messages you send.
  6. In the E-mail Address: text box, type: [Your PID]@vt.edu

    Note: Replace [Your PID] with your PID.

  7. In the Incoming Mail Server (POP3) text box, type: pop.vt.edu
  8. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
  9. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
  10. Clear the Remember Password check box.

    Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when checking mail in Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.

  11. Click the More Settings... button.
  12. Select the Outgoing Server tab.
  13. Place a check in the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
  14. Check to make sure the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button is selected.
  15. Select the Advanced tab.
  16. Under Incoming Server, place a check in the This Server Requires an Encrypted Connection (SSL) check box.The port should change to 995 (default is 110).
  17. Under Outgoing server (SMTP):, place a check in the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) check box.
  18. Change the port to 465 (the default is 25).
  19. Click OK.
  20. Click Next.
  21. Click Finish.
  22. Click Close.
