Printing Banner Reports to a Network Printer
Time to Complete (in minutes): 20
Question:
How do I print Banner reports to a printer in my office over the network?

Answer:
In order to print Banner reports to a printer in your office, you must prepare your network printer, ask your computer support person to request a Banner printer definition for the systems you use to print your reports, and then request access to your printer from the systems you use to print your reports.
  1. Prepare your network printer.

Note: In order to use your printer with Banner, your printer must be PostScript compatible.

    1. Configure your printer so that it is accessible over the network. You can accomplish this in one of two ways.
      • Connect your printer directly to the network via an Ethernet cable.

Note: Obtain an IP address for your printer, and consult your printer's documentation to configure your printer to use this IP address. You might want to get a hostname for your printer as well so you can easily change the printer's IP address.

      • Share your printer from a network-accessible Windows computer.

Note: If you are using Windows XP to share your printer, you may receive garbled output from your print jobs. To correct this error, refer to Microsoft's knowledge base article LPD server adds and prints control codes (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q150930).

    2. Record the following information:
      • Printer model
      • Printer hostname or IP address
        • If printing directly to the printer, use the printer's hostname or IP address.
        • If printing to a shared printer, use the hostname or IP address of the computer sharing the printer.

Note: It is recommended that you use a hostname for your printer or print server. This will allow you to change the IP address of your printer without affecting the ability to print because the hostname can be updated to use the new IP address.

      • Printer queue name
        • If printing directly to the printer, check your printer's documentation for this name.
        • If printing to a shared printer, in the printer's properties, use the "Share Name".
  2. Request a Banner printer definition for the systems you use to print your reports.
    1. Ask your department's computer support personnel to send an email message to Unix Administration Services at uas@vt.edu requesting that your printer be defined within Banner. The message should include the following information:
      • Printer type: "Postscript" or "Printer Served by Remote Host"
      • Printer model
      • Printer queue name
      • Printer hostname or IP address
      • Location of printer
      • Email address and phone number
      • Department information

Note: If your department does not have a computer support person, send the information and indicate that you do not have a technical support contact.

    2. Allow 2 to 3 days for your request to be processed.
  3. Request access to your printer from the Banner systems you use to print your reports. Once your Banner printer definition has been created, your computer support person should request your printer be enabled with the systems listed below that you will be using:

Note: If your department does not have a computer support person, send the following information and indicate that you do not have a technical support contact.
