Important: If you are behind a firewall, port 1500 must be opened in the firewall for the backup client to work. You must add the TSM server's IP address (198.82.162.47) to your list of trusted IP addresses.
To download, install, and configure TSM:
- Contact Eliza Lau at lau@vt.edu to register your computer's node name.
- Log on to your computer with an account that holds computer administrator privileges.
- If it exists, delete the [Your drive letter]:\tsm_images\TSM_BA_Client folder.
Note: Replace [Your drive letter] with the letter of the drive containing a previous TSM installation.
- Install the TSM client.
- Depending on which operating system you are using, download the appropriate installer.
- Save the file to your desktop.
- Run the installer.
- If you downloaded the 32-bit version, on your desktop, double-click the 6.4.0.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe icon.
- If you downloaded the 64-bit version, on your desktop, double-click the 6.4.0.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exe icon.
- Confirm running the installer.
- In Windows Vista, click the Continue button.
- In Windows 7/8, click the Yes button.
- Click Next.
- If not already selected, from the drop-down list, select English (United States).
- Click OK.
- In 8, if prompted to install additional items to meet requirements, click the Install button.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Select the Typical radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click the Install button.
- Click Finish.
- Restart your computer.
- If you are prompted to restart your computer, click the Yes button.
- If you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart your computer.
- Configure the TSM client.
- Go to the Index of /~lau (http://filebox.vt.edu/~lau/) Web page.
- Click the dsm.opt link.
- Highlight all of the text on the page.
- Right-click the highlighted text.
- Select Copy.
- Start Notepad.
- In Vista/7:
- Click the Start button.
- Select All Programs.
- Select Accessories.
- Select Notepad.
- In 8:
- On your desktop, in the lower-right corner, hover your mouse.
- In the panel that appears, at the top, click the Search charm. The cursor will automatically be placed in a text box.
- Type: Notepad
- Click the Notepad tile.
- From the Edit drop-down list, select Paste.
- After NODENAME, highlight the .vt.edu text.
- Type the node name upon which you and Eliza agreed.
Example: NODENAME abcd1234.vt.edu
- Place the cursor after domain all-local.
- Press the space bar key.
- Type: -systemstate
Example: domain all-local -systemstate
- From the File drop-down list, select Save As....
- From the Save as type: drop-down list, select All Files.
- In the File name: text box, type: dsm.opt
- Set the destination to your desktop.
- Click the Save button.
- Close all windows.
- Navigate to the [Your drive letter]:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient folder.
Note: Replace [Your drive letter] with the letter of the drive where TSM was installed.
- On your desktop, drag the dsm.opt icon to the baclient folder window.
- Click the Continue button.
- In Vista, click the Continue button.
- Start TSM Backup-Archive GUI.
- In Vista/7:
- Click the Start button.
- Select All Programs.
- Select Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Select Backup-Archive GUI..
- In 8, on the Start screen, click the Backup-Archive GUI. tile.
- Confirm running the program.
- In Vista:
- Click the Continue button.
- If prompted to unblock TSM, click the Unblock button.
- In 7/8:
- Click the Yes button.
- If prompted to unblock TSM:
- Place a check in the Private networks, such as my home or work network check box.
- Click the Allow access button.
- In the Password: text box, type the TSM password assigned to you.
- Click the Login button.
- Change your password.
- From the Utilities drop-down list, select Change Password....
- In the Current password: text box, type the TSM password assigned to you.
- In the New password: text box, type a new password.
- In the Verify password: text box, re-type the new password.
- Click the Change button.
- Click OK.
- Under Backup, click the Backup link.
- In the left pane, double-click Local.
- In the left pane, under Local, navigate to a folder containing a small file to use as a test of the backup process.
- In the right pane, place a check in the check box corresponding to the small file.
Note: Do not place a check in any hard drive check box(es). The initial backup may take a long time to run. Right now, you are testing the connection configuration.
- Click the Backup button.
- When the backup is complete, click OK.
- Close the Backup Report window.
- Set up the backup scheduler.
Note: This step is only necessary if you have never installed TSM before. If you have deleted a previous version of TSM, the scheduler already exists.
- From the Utilities drop-down list, select Setup Wizard.
- Place a check in the Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler check box.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Select the Install a new or additional scheduler radio button.
- Click Next.
- Place a check in the Use the Client Acceptor daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler check box.
- Click Next.
- In the TSM acceptor name text box, type: TSM Client Acceptor Daemon
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- In the TSM Password text box, type your TSM password.
- Click Next.
- If not already selected, select the The System account radio button.
- Select the Automatically when Windows boots radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Select the Yes radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click Apply.
- Click Finish.
- Check the schedule log to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
- Navigate to the [Your drive letter]:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient folder.
Note: Replace [Your drive letter] with the letter of the drive where TSM was installed.
- Double-click the dsmsched.log icon.
- Look at the text to verify that the scheduler has contacted the server.
- Close the log file window. Installation is complete. Backup will run at the scheduled time.
Note: The backup window is between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. If you have to turn your machine off after work, you can arrange to move your client to a daytime backup window by sending an email message to Eliza Lau at
lau@vt.edu.
- Send an email message to Eliza Lau at lau@vt.edu to tell her which computer has been set up. Include the computer's DNS name and the owner's name.
- Set up open file support to back up locked files (such as archived PST files in Microsoft Outlook).
- From the Utilities drop-down list, select Setup Wizard.
- Place a check in the Help me configure Open File Support check box.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Select the Volume Shadowcopy Services (VSS) radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click Apply.
- Click Finish.
- Restart your computer.
