Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Icon for the Central Services Domain Does Not Work

Question:
The custom Microsoft Management Console (MMC) icon for the Central Services domain that was sent to me does not work.How can I fix this?

Important:
  • You must perform these steps from a computer that belongs to the Virginia Tech Active Directory.
  • In order to complete these steps, you must log on to Windows with your Hokies ID and password.
  1. Remove the .vt extension from the file that was sent to you.
    1. Open My Computer.
      • In Windows XP:From the Start menu, select My Computer.
      • In Windows 2000: On your desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
    2. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options.
    3. Select the View tab.
    4. In the Advanced Settings list, clear the Hide Extensions for Known File Types check box.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Right-click the MMC icon on your desktop, and select Rename.
    7. From the existing file name, delete the ".vt" extension.
    8. Press the Enter key.
    9. To confirm the deletion, click the Yes button.
  2. Download the Windows Administrative Tools Package.
    • For Windows XP Service Pack 1 or higher and Windows 2003:
      1. Download the Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 Admin Pack (http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/1/681c9ba7-380f-4756-ac85-a3323437e6c3/WindowsServer2003-KB304718-AdministrationToolsPack.exe)
      2. Save the file to your desktop.
    • For Windows 2000:
      1. Download the Windows 2000 Admin Pack (http://computing.vt.edu/software_and_hardware/windows/w2kadmin/adminpak.msi).
      2. Save the file to your desktop.
  3. Double-click the adminpak.msi icon on your desktop.
  4. Click Next.
  5. If you receive a prompt telling you that you have an older version of the file, cancel the installation, uninstall the previous version through Add/Remove programs, the restart the installation of the latest versions.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. If you receive the following when trying to run your MMC:Error: "MMC cannont open the file .msc.This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file." you need to upgrade your MMC to the latest version.
  8. Download the most recent Microsoft Management Console.
    • Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=61FC1C66-06F2-463C-82A2-CF20902FFAE0&displaylang=en).
    • Windows 2003 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4c84f80b-908d-4b5d-8aa8-27b962566d9f&DisplayLang=en).
