To stop Word from capitalizing the letter "i" at the beginning of a word or when it stands alone:
- Start Word.
- Navigate to the AutoFormat options.
- In 2003/2004:
- From the Format drop-down list, select AutoFormat....
- Click the Options... button.
- Select the AutoCorrect tab.
- In 2007:
- Click the Office button.
- Click the Word Options button.
- In the left column, select Proofing.
- Click the AutoCorrect Options... button.
- In 2008/2011, from the Tools drop-down list, select AutoCorrect....
- In 2010/2013:
- Select the File tab.
- In the left column, select Options.
- In the left column, select Proofing.
- Click the AutoCorrect Options... button.
- Under Replace:, scroll down to i.
- Select i.
- Click the Delete button.
- Click OK.
