How do I create a rule in Eudora 7.1 for Windows XP, and Eudora 6.2 for Mac 10.4 and 10.5 that will filter unwanted e-mail messages from my VT Mail account?

Answer:

The best way to avoid unwanted e-mail (often known as spam) is to protect the privacy of your e-mail address. This article offers a tactic for filtering unwanted messages using header information once your address has become known to those who send mass mailings. The Virginia Tech mail servers tag all incoming e-mail that they suspect to be unsolicited messages (also known as spam) with a special header string beginning with "X-Junkmail" or "X-JunkMail". To filter messages with this header, create a new mailbox. Then, using the Filter tool, create a filter that puts all messages with "X-Junkmail:" and "X-JunkMail:" in the header into that mailbox. To create a rule to filter unwanted mail:

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. From the Mailbox menu, select New.
  3. Name the new mailbox:
  4. Click OK.
  5. Open the Filters window:
  6. Click the New button.
  7. In the first Header text box, type: X-Junkmail:
  8. From the drop-down list below the first Header text box, select Appears.
  9. From the next drop-down list, select Or.
  10. From the second Header text box, type: X-JunkMail:
  11. From the drop-down list below the second Header text box, select Appears.
  12. Under Action, from the first drop-down list, select Transfer To.
  13. Direct the filter to transfer messages to the Junkmail mailbox:
  14. Under Action, from the second drop-down list, select Server Options.
  15. Place a check in the Delete check box.
  16. Under Action, from the third drop-down list, select Skip Rest.
  17. Close the Filter window.
