How do I create a rule in Eudora 7.1 for Windows XP, and Eudora 6.2 for Mac 10.4 and 10.5 that will filter unwanted e-mail messages from my VT Mail account?
Answer:
The best way to avoid unwanted e-mail (often known as spam) is to protect the privacy of your e-mail address. This article offers a tactic for filtering unwanted messages using header information once your address has become known to those who send mass mailings. The Virginia Tech mail servers tag all incoming e-mail that they suspect to be unsolicited messages (also known as spam) with a special header string beginning with "X-Junkmail" or "X-JunkMail". To filter messages with this header, create a new mailbox. Then, using the Filter tool, create a filter that puts all messages with "X-Junkmail:" and "X-JunkMail:" in the header into that mailbox. Important: Mail must come through the Virginia Tech mail servers in order to apply this rule. These instructions will not work if you forward your VT Mail messages to an outside mail account, such as Yahoo! or Hotmail.
To create a rule to filter unwanted mail:

Start Eudora.

From the Mailbox menu, select New.

Name the new mailbox:

In Windows XP: In the Name the New Mailbox text box, type: Junkmail

In Mac 10.4, 10.5: In the Please Name the New Mailbox text box, type: Junkmail

Click OK.

Open the Filters window:

In Windows XP: From the Tools menu, select Filters.

In Mac 10.4, 10.5: From the Window menu, select Filters.

Click the New button.

In the first Header text box, type: X-Junkmail:

From the drop-down list below the first Header text box, select Appears.

From the next drop-down list, select Or.

From the second Header text box, type: X-JunkMail:

From the drop-down list below the second Header text box, select Appears.

Under Action, from the first drop-down list, select Transfer To.

Direct the filter to transfer messages to the Junkmail mailbox:

In Windows XP: Click the large In button that appears, and select Junkmail.

In Mac 10.4, 10.5:

Click the button next to Transfer To.

From the Transfer menu, select Junkmail.

Under Action, from the second drop-down list, select Server Options.

Place a check in the Delete check box.

Under Action, from the third drop-down list, select Skip Rest.

Close the Filter window.

Save the Filters:
