Question:

How do I create a rule in Evolution that will filter unwanted e-mail messages from my VT Mail account?

Answer:

The best way to avoid unwanted e-mail (often known as spam) is to protect the privacy of your e-mail address. This article offers a tactic for filtering unwanted messages using header information once your address has become known to those who send mass mailings. For more information about techniques for handling unwanted messages, see Receiving Unwanted E-mail Messages (http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/email/vtkb1064.htm).

The Virginia Tech mail servers tag all incoming e-mail that they suspect to be unsolicited messages (also known as spam) with a special header string beginning with "X-Junkmail" or "X-JunkMail". To filter messages with this header, create a new folder. Then, create a rule that puts all messages with "X-Junkmail" and "X-JunkMail" in the header into a separate folder. To do this:

Important: Mail must come through the Virginia Tech mail servers in order to apply this rule. These instructions will not work if you forward your VT Mail messages to an outside mail account, such as Yahoo! or Hotmail.
  1. Start Evolution.
  2. Right-click On This Computer, and select New Folder.
  3. Enter a name for the new folder.
  4. From the Edit menu, select Message Filters.
Note: Make sure that Incoming Messages is selected.
  5. In the Add Rule text box, type a name for your rule.
  6. From the Execute Actions drop-down list, select If Any Criteria Are Met.
  7. Under If, from the first drop-down list, select Specific Header.
  8. In the text box that appears, type: X-Junkmail
  9. From the drop-down list to the right of the text box, select Exists.
  10. Click the Add Criterion button.
  11. A new set of drop-down lists will appear. From the first drop-down list, select Specific Header.
  12. In the text box that appears, type: X-JunkMail
  13. From the drop-down list to the right of the text box, select Exists.
  14. Under Then, from the drop-down list, select Move to Folder.
  15. Select the folder that you created.
  16. Click OK.
  17. In the Add Rule window, click OK.
  18. Click the Up button until the rule is at the top of the list.
  19. Close any open windows.
Important: Be sure to check the contents of your junk mail folder before deleting the e-mail messages. The mail system's spam filters may sometimes mark messages that you wish to receive as junk mail.
