Question:
How do I install the Virginia Tech Certification Authority (VTCA) root certificate for Internet Explorer 6/7 in Windows?
Answer:
Important: Log on to Windows with an account with computer administrator privileges.
There are three different methods for installing the VTCA root certificate:

Use the immediate installation mode.

Go to the VTCA Bundle Install download (http://www.pki.vt.edu/gettingstarted/vtca_bundle_install.exe).

Click the Open button. The certificate will install automatically.

Verify that the certificate is installed properly.

Start Internet Explorer.

From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
-
Select the Content tab.
-
Click the Certificates button.
-
Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.
-
Double-click Virginia Tech Root CA.
-
Select the Details tab.
-
Select Thumbprint.
-
Under Value, verify that this value is listed:
"af 6f eb 42 fa 2f e4 a2 6e 9f 7f b5 b5 ff 3a bc 13 c6 0d 81"

Click OK.

Click the Close button.

Click OK.

Quit Internet Explorer.

Install the certificate using the VTnet CD.

Install the root certificate from the VTnet CD. For instructions on getting the CD, refer to Obtaining the Most Recent Version of VTnet (http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/email/vtkb1091.htm).

Verify that the certificate is installed properly.

Start Internet Explorer.

From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.

Select the Content tab.

Click the Certificates button.

Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.

Double-click Virginia Tech Root CA.

Select the Details tab.
-
Select Thumbprint.

Under Value, verify that this value is listed:
"af 6f eb 42 fa 2f e4 a2 6e 9f 7f b5 b5 ff 3a bc 13 c6 0d 81"

Click OK.

Click the Close button.

Click OK.

Quit Internet Explorer.

Use the verbose installation mode.

Download the VTCA Root Certificate (https://secure.hosting.vt.edu/www.pki.vt.edu/download/root/cacert.crt).

Click the Open button.

Click the Install Certificate button.

Click Next.
-
Select the Automatically Select Certificate Stored Based on the Type of Certificate option.

Click Next.
-
Click Finish.

To add the certificate to the root store, click the Yes button.

In the Certificate Import Wizard window, click OK.

In the Certificate window, click OK.

Verify that the certificate is installed properly.

Start Internet Explorer.

From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.

Select the Content tab.

Click the Certificates button.

Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.

Double-click Virginia Tech Root CA.

Select the Details tab.

Select Thumbprint.

Under Value, verify that this value is listed:

Click OK.
