Question:
What is a Roaming Profile, and how do I set up one with the Virginia Tech Network-Attached Storage (NAS) in Windows 2000/XP?
Answer:
A Roaming Profile allows you to log on to any workstation that is a member of any domain in the Virginia Tech Active directory and receive the same working environment. By using a Roaming Profile, your desktop and My Documents folder will remain consistent regardless of your location, and will be stored centrally on the NAS server. Each time you log on to a workstation in the Virginia Tech Active Directory with your Hokies ID and password, your profile will be downloaded from the NAS server to that machine.
-
If you have not set up a NAS space, refer to Creating Your Space on the Virginia Tech Network-Attached Storage (NAS) in Windows 2000/XP, Mac OS X, or Linux (http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/ad_min/vtkb2113.htm).
-
If you have already set up a NAS space:
-
Log on to Hokies Self-Service (http://selfservice.w2k.vt.edu/) with your Hokies ID and password.
Note: You will experience a brief redirect when you click on the Hokies Self-Service link.
-
Select the My Storage tab.
-
In the Modify column, place a check in the Add check box.
-
Click the Modify Settings button.
-
Wait at least 15 minutes, and then log off your computer.
-
Log on to your computer using your Hokies ID and password.
Note: A cached copy of your profile is kept on any workstation where you log on. If you have a slow network connection, such as a modem connection, you may experience slower logon or logoff times due to extra time it takes to download and upload your profile.
